Artist statement

My practice focuses mainly on sickness, in relation with my physical disability. I develop these works in the frame of contemporary writing and visual arts with philosophic or purely poetic forms. Using the performance, I ask the question: How can I perform when I’m limited in all everyday life gestures? Through this, helped by my life assistants, I play with limits from immobility to movement, constraint to freedom, impossible to initiation.

I also use my body to distort some common social/psychological prejudices regarding disability. Using my fragile condition, I try to go beyond pain and suffuring representations to show situations of beauty, desire and life.

Being openly inspired philosophically by “non-duality”orientalist branch and some western artistic avant-gardes, I try in the creation process to explore those inspirations. Proposed images become also a way to deconstruct my own, then mental and physical spaces. Actions cause in this case not only meaning but also an enlightened silence. A ritual time when the body becomes entirely a voice, devoid of all its other organs.

Kamil Guenatri (La Terrasse).

Born on February 2, 1984 in Algeria, lives and works at Toulouse (France).

Education:

2009-2011: Studying to the Performance art, poetry and contemporary writing studio (Art center – “Le Mirail” University - Toulouse).
Since 2010: member of the action art company "Le nuage en pantalon" leads by Serge Pey.
2007-2010: Polish language/culture graduated ("Le Mirail" University - Toulouse).
2001-2007: Software Engineering graduated ("Paul Sabatier" University - Toulouse).

Directing experiences:

2014-2015: Performance art teaching at Arènes high school – Toulouse.
2011-2013: Assistant to the Performance art, poetry and contemporary writing studio. Co-organizer of "Les Lundis poésie”: weekly laboratory of poetry, literature, performance art, experimentalcinema ("Le Mirail" University and "La Cave Poésie" Theater - Toulouse).
2013-2014: Performance art teaching with teenagers (program for high school artistic education – Tarn).
